I don’t know if the cost-benefit ratio is different in a big company than in a medium one. If it is, I suspect it’s only because big companies can afford more bureaucracy and duplication. In theory there should be economies of scale for corporate IT that small companies lack; in practice there seem to be diseconomies of scale as well.

Which tools do you start with?

If you have a medium business, you have a lot of software needs. You will need project management software, accounting software, payroll software and more. But there are many other pieces of software that will help you run your business better. For example, if you need to do bookkeeping, you will want accounting software. Or if you need to manage employees, you may want payroll software. A medium sized business is one that has between 10 and 100 employees (or the equivalent). When I go into a company and ask how they manage projects, the answer is often “we use email!” However, email was never designed to manage projects, it was designed to communicate. Then look at what they offer. Also, read reviews (if any) and ask anybody who has used them.
